The canoe trail Gunnilboån in the Bergslagen region in Sweden
One of the many canoe trails that start in Bergslagen and flow down to the valley of Mälaren. All of these canoe trails pass the northern botanic limit, but no other river shows the contrast in nature like Gunnilboån does. A great way to see the differences between wilderness and a more mellow landscape. A good rest area is located at the beginning of the river, it invites paddlers to camp the night before the paddling starts. The river starts in Trummelsbo, which was a Swedish Klondike with a rich mining past. Once a small, flourishing, iron producing society. Today an overgrown ghost town. The ruins are still there, and a good message board shows photographs from the old days and gives a brief historical explanation (in Swedish). Let your imagination take you back in time. Nordic Discovery arranges guided tours at the townsite. There is no maintenance along the canoe trail.

The paddler is a guest in the nature and is required to demonstrate responsibility and care. Not to harm and not to destroy. We have the right to enjoy Swedish nature, but there is also a duty to behave responsibly. The paddler’s only trace should be the whirlpools from the paddles.
